The unique house dedicated to the composer, pianist and conductor in the music city of Leipzig
The address Goldschmidtstrasse 12 in Leipzig - not far from the Gewandhaus - was the last residence of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). It is the artist's only remaining private address and the house in which he died.
Since 1997, the building has been the world’s only museum dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It was built in 1844/45 in Leipzig’s version of late classicism and its existence had been under threat for a long time. It is only thanks to the ongoing commitment of Professor Kurt Masur and his "Mendelssohn-Haus e.V." association that it was possible to preserve and renovate the historic building.
In 2003, the city of Leipzig established a foundation to provide further financing for the Mendelssohn-Haus to preserve Mendelssohn's unique cultural legacy.
